Il carnevale finisce male

This is a great phrase that can be used in a variety of settings. None of them particularly good, I think :)

Il carnevale finisce male
Literally, “the carnival ends badly”

I am familiar with this phrase from a 1969 Caterina Caselli song. The phrase, of course, rhymes in Italian. I was also able to find this exact phrase in an old play by Vincenzo Martini, where it has a more literal sense (the Venice carnival is mentioned multiple times in the text). I would not be surprised if the phrase was an actual proverb, perhaps a local one.
