Da Vinci’s famous cat quote

This is another one of those Italian quotes that I can’t seem to track down. Any garden variety book on cats will tell you that Leonardo da Vinci himself was very fond of these creatures to the point of issuing  an official statement:
The smallest feline is a masterpiece.” The chap knew a few things about masterpieces, apparently. As it turns out, it is not difficult to locate an Italian version of this saying: “Il più piccolo felino è un capolavoro.” The problem is that this quote shows up for the first time (as far as I know) in an Italian translation of Gina Spadafori’s “Cats for dummies.” Somehow, I find it very hard to believe that the translator took the time to locate Da Vinci’s original phrase. It is also possible that the phrase is in Latin. Either way, my search lead to nothing. However, I happen to agree with the phrase!
